Last night I had the totally fun opportunity to meet and chat with Katie Workman, author of The Mom 100 Cookbook, at Changing Hands Bookstore (fave!!!) in Tempe AZ. She, along with her delightful Mom and two sons Jack and Charlie, managed to be hilarious even after jet-lag, one radio show, two TV appearances and welcome-to-Phoenix-109-degree-heat. Katie is Founding Editor in Chief of Cookstr.com, the wonderful online recipe collection, and seems to have a story for every recipe-type, ingredient and daily food dilemma. It makes you want to just hang in her family’s NYC abode while the clan (of the Workman Publishing lineage – such cool books always) chills, cooks and shares comments.
Hearing Katie and her sons earlier in the day on Kim and Don’s Culinary Confessions talk-show, I had some idea what to expect, but when I flipped open her book to the section Fish and Seafood, I cracked up at the mantra “Just eat the damn fish.” Could I relate or what? Seriously, it was the lead-in line and my first hint that this would be a cookbook for total-immersion mom-enjoyment reading as well as delicious and sanity-saving cooking. It sounds as though her recipe for One Skillet Cheesy Beef and Macaroni would make a great Braces-Friendly recipe, so I’ll be trying that (and many others) as soon as I can tear away from the Simple Weeknight Dessert section that starts out with Katie’s Hot Fudge Sauce and description: “Sorry, I think I blacked out for a minute there. Look, whenever cream, chocolate, and butter meet, only good things can happen.”
