Tomatoes – the wonder food for braces-friendly recipes

Tomatoes

Tomatoes from the garden are great! But canned ones are fantastic to have on hand, too.

Tomatoes are one of my favorite foods! They are one of nature’s tenderizers for creating braces-friendly dinners and they’re easy to have on hand for recipes because they come in so many canned varieties.  I just realized that in my book, The Braces Cookbook 2: Comfort Food with a Gourmet Touch, I use canned diced tomatoes in five recipes, and either tomato paste, soup or sauce in seven more!
FYI, one 14.5-ounce can of crushed tomatoes = 1 1/3 cups actual cut-up tomatoes when drained (or 1 3/4 cups total volume with liquid).

  1. I don’t like to admit this, but sometimes canned tomatoes taste better than store-bought. Why is this, (and I hope it’s not because of salt and preservatives)?
